Sun Valley....”A Savored Favorite”
If you like plush accommodations, top of the line skiing as well as excellent food, Sun Valley was the place to be this year. Our group of 43 skiers left on Saturday, January 21st from BWI Airport to Boise, Idaho. Although there was a long bus ride to the resort, a stop for food, a few good movies and some fun games made the time pass quickly. When we finally arrived at the resort — we were all blown away by the grandeur of the place. Granite and marble entrance ways, hand carved heavy wood doors and an interior space that came straight out of a Ralph Lauren catalog was more than enough to offset the ride to get there. Our group had a “Meet and Greet” pizza party a few hours after we arrived, which kicked the week into high gear. Everyone came to the pizza party and mixed and mingled before heading back to their elegant rooms for a restful night’s sleep. The next morning we were met by lots of snow and sunny clear skies. Our group enjoyed the first of 3 Blue Ridge Ski Council (BRSC) events that evening— the Welcome Party. Plenty of good food and drinks were had by all. Our second day was also filled with bright skies and great groomed trails. By Tuesday, our group was ready for the NASTAR Race. The Baltimore Ski Club raced against the other clubs and had a fun time doing it. I am proud to say our group won 3 metals (2 bronze and 1 silver). That same evening we enjoyed the 2nd (1 BRSC Event — the Après Ski Party. This was also another winner with great food and another chance to make new friends both in our club as well as with the members of the other ski groups that were represented. Wednesday (aka Hump Day) was a day that many used as a “rest” day while others took to the slopes again. Sun Valley Resort really caters to skiers as well as non-skiers and has a good offering of optional activities — massages, shopping outings, lunches in town, etc are just a few of the items available to those who wanted to “cash out” a day of skiing and see what the resort had to offer. This was also the day for our group dinner – Bald Mountain Pasta and Pizza –don’t let the name fool you — a great Italian meal was in store for our group. A happy and very full group rested afterwards for another day on the slopes. Thursday was another fun day of skiing with a little afternoon snow to make things more interesting. We had our final BRSC Event that evening — the Farewell Dinner and Dance (our group cut the rug and the roast beef that evening). Another night of top shelf food and dancing was had by all with most people staying to close down the place for the evening. On our final ski day, Friday, the snow gods saw that more snow came down — it was nice to have some fresh powder but a little difficult to see. Our return to the Airport on Saturday was delayed by a jack-knifed trailer luckily the carrier held our flight until our arrival. Unfortunately, although we made our flight out of Sun Valley, our skis didn’t. Due to weight considerations no one was able to take their skies. Little glitch but one less item to carry home — I was more than happy to have them delivered to my house the next day! Everyone had a great time!
