Looking back at Greece
If you were not one of the 57 people that went on this year's
BSC Trip to Greece all I can say is that you really missed out.
The group departed from BWI Airport on October 2nd for Venice, Italy.
We arrived early in the morning and after arriving at our hotel,
we dropped off our luggage and immediately hit the streets of Venice.
We made the most of the day taking in the beauty and sights in Venice
before returning that evening for some well deserved sleep. The
next day we got up early and again went walking around the many
islands that comprise Venice. The three that are the most notable
are Burano, Murano and Torcello. Murano is the island known for
its famous glass. We were able to see how the artisans make all
those items as well as bring some home for our friends and family.
Burano is the island that makes beautiful lace products that are
sold all over the world and Torcello which is the first inhabited
of the islands. Later in the afternoon the group gathered to board
busses to depart for our cruise to Greece. Venice is a beautiful
departure location; the views of the ship going through the Grand
Canal were breathtaking.
The cruise began with a day at sea, in which everyone had a chance to catch up on some much needed rest. Of course, we ate and ate and ate that day! The next morning we arrived at Piraeus, the port of the capital of Greece, and took excursions into Athens to see the Acropolis and Parthenon. The following day we went to Mykonos, the party island of Greece, with lots of local Greek culture to experience. For those that wanted to go back in time, many went to Delos. Delos is an uninhabited island that is full of archeological ruins it is like walking through a living museum. Our next stop was Katakolon, home to the first Olympics back in 776 BC. It was fun to imagine what it was like to like there in the day! Our last stop on the Greek islands was Corfu. Most of us walked around and took in the historical and contemporary sights, which included Paleokastritsa and the Achilleion Palace. This was also a great island to do that last minute shopping.
Out final stop on our cruise was the city of Split in Croatia. Croatia is on the same latitude as the Italian and French Riviera; that is why it is called the Split Riviera it even had palm trees. We saw beautiful gardens while also enjoying a fun day seeing 17th century churches and doing some inexpensive shopping. Many also took an excursion to Trogir, which was a nearby city where we got to see some on the countryside, listen to local music and have some food. Our cruise ended and dropped us back in Venice for a final chance to see all the things we missed on our first two days.
The cruise provided some wonderful evenings of dining, shows, dancing and meeting others on our trip. Those memories will soon not be forgotten by anyone.
If you felt like you would have enjoyed our trip, make sure you don't miss the next one! Join us this coming October for a trip to Barcelona and a 7 day cruise that will make stops in Cannes, France, as well as, Portofino, Florence, Rome, Naples and Capri, Italy!
