The 2012 Deer Valley - Park City Ski Trip 2/25/12 to 3/3/12
19 anxious Atlanta bound BSC members were quickly deplaned following a problem with closing the luggage hold compartment doors . After a brief attempt to repair the holds, passengers were told to disembark and to chew as much gum as their jaws could handle to be used to seal the compartment doors. That didn't seem like enough, so duct tape and bungee cords were used and everyone took their seats and buckled up!
After changing planes in Atlanta and an on-time arrival, the group loaded a private coach in Salt Lake City. Stops for groceries and liquor, lift tickets, condo keys and to sign lives away at the hospitality center (to discourage irresponsible hot tub activity or rock star-like behavior) were made before unloading shortly before midnight at the Greyhawk and Foxglove condominiums just a half a mile down the street from Deer Valley resort. Lynn Jean, Deanna Lyston, Mary Nichols and Sharon Albaugh all enjoyed adult beverages until 2:30 a.m.
Meeting up with the club were Kristal Nicholson and Christine Jones from Ohio; Becky Friedberg from New Mexico; and Anita Allen from New Jersey.
Sunday morning, a majority skied Deer Valley . An aprés ski wine and cheese with OSCAR awards on the TV was hosted by trip leaders Christopher Pukalski and Bruce Eichen at #12 Foxglove also inhabited by John Morris, Dale Deger, Neale Tyler and Becky Friedberg. A surprise visit was made by former Columbia Ski Club member and now full-time Park City resident Kitty Imdahl who provided an outstanding overview. Dale snoozed through the entire party and presentation in his private loft two stories above. As the final club guests were leaving and the dishwasher was loaded, Dale awoke ready for late night TV and beer!
Monday morning, Kitty met the group at the bottom of the PayDay lift at Park CIty and led an all mountain tour. According to an eyewitness, Linda Alexander played 'chicken' with another skier. Both lost one ski and Linda slid about 20 yards, but got up and while shaken a bit, proved okay to enjoy the rest of the week.
Monday's aprés ski featured 10 two-topping pizzas, beer and salad at Main Street Pizza & Noodle. Chip Green had a fuzzy navel drink courtesy of Mike Levy, must be some police buddy thing going on!! Peter Linden enjoyed pineapple and pepperoni pizza mmmm sweet and spicy. Kristal and Christine ordered cheese on cheese. A line formed in the restaurant's basement to use the restrooms before heading out to stroll Park City's historic Main Street. Becky got a good ten minute upper body workset in while servicing the women's restroom . Neale noted the sheepish look on the girl's face who apologized as she quickly exited the room before Becky walked in!
On Tuesday, we received a minimum 7" of fresh powder and the skiing was, according to locals, the best so far this season . Not all of the condos had hot tubs so Peter Linden and Jim Tabeling came over to #12 Foxglove. Jim T. did a slip 'n slid in the driveway on his way, but luckily was okay. While the hot tub was boiling outside, inside John Morris decided to take advantage of pizza leftovers while setting the condo microwave timer for 5 hours (yikes!) and not 5 minutes. No smoke alarms were set-off as a result of this oversight! Becky watched Pawn Stars and Swamp People on the History Channel among other guy interest TV favorites while Bruce manned the remote control. Mal Mihalovich, Jan Serwint, Linda Smith and Anita Allen weren't taking any chances with incoming flying foreign objects while hot tubbing not far away (see pic).
Wednesday, everyone loaded local buses to Prospector Square for dining at The Grub Steak House. The menu choices of Chicken Breast, Prime Rib, Northwestern Salmon Filet, Baby Back Pork Ribs and The Grub Steak Tender Cut were excellent as were trips to an unlimited bread, salad and fresh fruit bar. The dessert choices were hard to deny chocolate cake, cheesecake, mud pie, apple crumb cobbler and more. After dinner, it was snowing so much the group attempted to break the record for most people carrying doggie bags while stuffed into a bus stop shelter.
After skiing on Thursday, club members hot tubbed, shopped, dined, looked up their genealogy at the Family Tree Center on the Main Street and enjoyed the myriad of varied bars and galleries historic Park City offers.
Friday night was shared by all again (with a few absent) at #12 Foxglove. Carol Willasch was first to arrive and then left after 20 minutes!! Accolades to Dale for making from scratch his special beef and bean chili. Most had two bowls. Chip and Mike cut their final ski day at Deer Valley early to get world class massage and spa treatments at the Stein Eriksen Lodge followed by showing up in their loose sweatpants at the seafood buffet at the Snow Park Lodge. Everyone spent the evening packing and then relaxing in preparation for the bus to Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City before the flights home. Just before boarding the bus, Dale discovered a live .38OT hollow point round in his jeans pocket which had been there since departure from Baltimore!
Barb Klotz lost turns on the slope due to being sidelined from sciatica were found and multiplied by Linda and Gary Smith who proved themselves the hardest core of skiing animals!
The club had a direct flight home which was nice but all agreed the club could have stayed a few more days!
Bruce Eichen and Christopher Pukalski.
