Bormio, Italy
March 6 - March 14, 2010 with Optional 3 Days on
the Italian Riviera, ends on March 17
For 2010, BRSC has chosen for its Eurofest the uniquely
Italian resort of Bormio. Nestled amid snowy peaks not far from
the Swiss and Austrian borders, Bormio is yet very convenient
to cosmopolitan Milan. The combination of challenging Alpine skiing,
après-ski relaxation and the aesthetics of a medieval Italian
town provide all the ingredients for a BRSC Eurofest to be remembered.
Bormio resort is neatly divided into an "old town" and a "new town" and each in its own right should deliver exactly what you feel you might be looking for. Bormio in Italy's Sondrio province is a unique combination of the old and the new. It is a mountain town at the foot of Passo Stelvio, which, by the way, is open to skiers and cars only in summer. The old town which is where the majority of shopping and some of the hotels are located, still retains much of its magical Italian charm and way of life.
Meanwhile in the newer part of town close to the ski lifts to Bormio two and three thousand, the place almost has a purpose-built aura about it. What it lacks in style, however, it more than makes up for in convenience. However the old town is where you will best get a taste of true Italian life, especially in the evenings. Here, a maze of small lanes zig and zag in all directions from the main street, and, especially around five o'clock in the evening, hordes of Italians can be seen doing exactly what Italians love to do so much; namely put on some nice clothes and walk up and down the street primarily for the benefit of the other Italians who are doing precisely the same thing. It's a tradition. For those who are interested in skiing, consider this. Bormio is skiable to just over 3,000 m from convenient lifts operating from the "new town". There are about 75km of prepared slopes awaiting skiers of all different standards. Most of this will start at Bormio 2,000, and branch in all directions, including upwards. Even at these heights there are plenty of slopes for the less experienced skier, including the total beginner. Good, middle - intermediate runs are also close at hand, making the area a most acceptable one for most holidaying skiers. True experts will be delighted if they arrive in the resort after a fresh snowfall, as Bormio provides plenty of slopes to experience the "steep and deep" without risking your hide in avalanches. New snowmaking facilities have made the run home a little more bearable, but unless there is plenty of snow coverage novice skiers would be well advised to take the cable car down. Santa Caterina is about a dozen km from Bormio by road, but light years away in reality. The resort is almost 100% "purpose built" and has all the convenience one would expect from that type of destination. However the place is richly endowed with charm as well, and has none of the eyesore qualities of so many "built for skiing only" resorts. The skiing is of the high and wide variety, and lends itself perfectly to what many of us are - once a year recreational skiers. Snow conditions often allow those practicing their moves in powder the right terrain and conditions to do just that.
