Whiteface is run by the Olympic Regional Development
Authority. There is lift-serviced terrain from 4,386 feet
(1,337 m) and hike-to terrain from 4,650 feet (1,420 m).
With a base elevation of 1,220 feet, Whiteface has the greatest
vertical drop in the east at 3,430 feet. Whiteface also has more
vertical drop than Vail Colorado, Park City Utah, Mont Tremblant
Quebec, Breckenridge Colorado, and Aspen Colorado. Its neighbor,
Little Whiteface, is tops in altitude at 3,676 ft. Whiteface
has a total of 18 miles (29 km) of ski terrain spread
out over 76 trails. 220 acres (0.89 km2) of skiing
area include the "Slides", 35 acres of expert extreme
adventure terrain. The Slides is an unmaintained wilderness area
that is rarely open, due to safety hazards. They can only be accessed
by hiking from the top of the Summit Quad. A new 13-acre terrain
park was added in 2000–01 with ramps, rails, and pipes.
Whiteface has a separate area for beginners known as Kids Kampus.
The ski trails receive plenty of southern exposure sometimes causing
ice to form later in the day and subtle breezes sometimes blow
snow off the trails, contributing to the nickname "iceface".
In recent years major improvements in snowmaking and grooming
have overcome these problems. Whiteface contains 76 trails accessible
by one gondola, eight chairlifts, and one conveyor lift. Some
98% of the trails are covered by snowmaking, excluding the glades
and the Slides. The Slides are double diamond runs that are usually
only open at the end of the skiing season due to avalanche danger.
They are between 35-40 degrees with natural hazards for over 1250'
vertical.
Gore Mountain is a ski resort on Gore Mountain in the Adirondack Mountains, located in North Creek, New York. Gore Mountain is one of the three ski areas owned by the state of New York; the others are Whiteface Mountain and Belleayre Mountain. Gore Mountain has 88 trails and 13 lifts (9 chairlifts, a gondola, one j-bar, and a poma lift). Gore mountain has a wide variety of terrain catering to alpine skiers of all levels featuring 10 greens, 37 blues, 9 blacks, 4 double blacks, and 13 glades. Gore also has 12 nordic trails for cross country skiing. Gore Mountain was voted in the "Top 10 for Value" by Ski Magazine in 2006. In 2008-2009 ski season Gore will be adding 5 new runs to the mountain as it completes its Burnt Ridge expansion. This new quad will offer skiers an opportunity to ski two new glades, two intermediate trails and one expert run. This expansion coincides with an expansion at the state run Whiteface ski area. Gore Mountain is also home to many unmarked glades. The Snoopy is a steep run alongside blue square Foxlair. An easier run is Upper Mica, a run off the diamond Open Pit, connecting to the blue square Mica Park. Another notable run is Darkslide, a glade off Lower Steilhang connecting with the diamond glade Darkside. Lastly on Chatiemac Glades there is a bowl located outside the boundaries of the resort called East Wall. The Rumor, the steepest trail in eastern America, runs along the north face of Gore Mountain, from the summit to the bottom of the Straightbrook Valley. Other double black diamonds on Gore Mountain include Lies, The Rumor's twin, Lower Steilhang, a windy, steep, and narrow trail running from the summit to the High Peaks Area, and Upper Darby, another steep, windy run. Gore Mountain is spread out among three different mountains, with six diverse areas all over the resort. The Northwoods Area, includes the Showcase, Wild Air, and Sunway. The Northwoods Area is home to Stokes, one of Gore Mountain's two terrain parks, and many beginner cruisers. Sunway is a beginner run, stretching three miles from the top of the Adirondack Express, a high speed triple, to the base of the mountain. Twister, a wide, windy, and hilly run, is a arun for intermediate and advanced skiers. Twister glades, west of the blue square, Twister, is over one mile long. The Burnt Ridge area is new to Gore Mountain in 2008. Burnt Ridge Mountain offers advanced and intermediate cruisers, with a new high speed quad, Burnt Ridge Quad, to carry skiers back up to the top of the mountain. The Topridge Area offers advanced cruiser runs from the gondola summit to the bottom of Topridge Valley, and Straightbrook Valley. The Straightbrook Quad carries skiers from the base of the Straightbrook Valley to the summit of the mountain resort. The summit of Gore Mountain, at 3,600 feet in the air, offers views of Adirondack Mountains. The High Peaks Area is the oldest region of the mountain. This area lies just west of the summit. These windy and narrow trails range from intermediate to expert. The High Peaks chair runs from the bottom of High Peaks mountain to the Gore Mountain's summit. The North Side includes long, wide cruisers runs from the top of Bear Mountain to the base of the North Quad, which carries skiers back to the Bear Mountain summit, where skiers can ski back down to the Gore Mountain base.
